Obituary For Melvin Augustus Cook
April 19, 1928 - December 27, 2020


Melvin Augustus Cook, 92, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020, at UNC-Rockingham Health Care in Eden.

A graveside service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, December 29, at Overlook Cemetery. 

Born April 19, 1928 in Rockingham County, NC, Melvin was the son of the late Gus and Cora Self Cook.  He was a US Army veteran and a 1991 retiree of Vanier Graphics.  Before going to work with Vanier Graphics he worked for his family’s business, Cook’s Grocery, and later became co-owner of the business, alongside his brother, David.  Melvin was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where he served on the church vestry.  In his younger years he was a volunteer fireman for Spray Fire Station.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Gammon of Eden; one granddaughter, Brandy Brooks (Travis) of Asheboro; two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Calleigh Brooks of Asheboro; special family friend and caregiver, Chris Covington; and his faithful 4-legged friend, Gus.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Cook; two brothers, James Cook and David Cook; and four sisters, Magdalene Gibson, Viola Cook, Vivian Vestal and Margaret Rorrer.
