Fred Thomas Hand, 90, of Shadygrove Road, Eden, peacefully left for his heavenly home on Monday, May 2, 2022 at his home.

A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Fair Funeral Home Chapel in Eden, N.C. Visitation with the family is planned prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Fred was born on February 7, 1932 in Madison, N.C. to the late Bartley and India Hand. While stationed at Eglin Air Force Base serving in the United States Air Force, he met the love of his life, Dorothy (Dottie) Caudill Hand. They were married on June 2, 1955 in Eglin, Florida. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force on November 1, 1955. After moving back to Rockingham County, Fred gave his life to the Lord and was baptized on July 30, 1961 at Leakesville Christian Church, He faithfully led his family to serve the Lord and was ordained as a deacon on July 15, 1962 and later as an elder. Fred later became a member of Draper Christian Church where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher for many years.  Fred began working for Karastan Service Center in May, 1964 and was later promoted to supervisor before becoming the owner of Smith and Lane Appliances in Eden. He retired in 1996 when he sold that business.

After his retirement, Fred found great pleasure working in the garden or fixing something in the workshop. He spent many hours serving the church family at Draper Christian with his wisdom, teaching, and encouragement. He was known for doing a job well and doing it right. He loved his family and found joy in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Dottie Hand, his sons, Tom Hand (Sherrie) of Madison, N.C., and Greg Hand (Tammy) of Gasburg, Virginia; his grandchildren, Lynn Hand White (David) of Youngsville, N.C., Robert Hand (Kate) of Franklinton, N.C., and Matt Hand (Megan) of Fishersville, Virginia; Great-grandchildren, Joshua White, Malina Hand, Lilly Hand, Jackson Hand, Holton Hand, Hayes Hand, and Lana Hand; his special neighbors, Scott and Laura Bryant, and Larry and Linda Joyce; loving nieces and nephews and several special cousins.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Bartley and India Hand, his brother, Willard Hand, his sister, Janie Hand, and brother, Ray Hand.

The family would like to thank the family of Draper Christian Church and Hospice of Rockingham County for their love and support over the past month. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Fred’s memory be made to Draper Christian Church, Eden, North Carolina.

Fred was a sweet, kind man. Years ago I worked for him when he was in the finance business. He and Dottie became some of our closest
friends over the years.  My love and sympathy goes out to Dottie, Tommy, and Grey and their families.

Alone and scared of not being accepted into church, this man and his wife greeted me as if I were a long lost relative and surrounded me with love as I walked through the door of Draper Christian church.  They put me in between them and I felt love just like Jesus told them to love   Through the years Fred and Dottie knew I so loved the tiny tomatoes that grow wild in their front yard. Fred would say "von, come get your tomatoes!"  Fred loved and Dottie I am praying so much for you. Fred was one of a kind and I loved him so.  I will miss his smile and his warm welcome to every person he ever met.

I have just found out about the passing of Fred. Dottie I am so sorry. We have known y'all for many years starting at Leaksville Christian Church. I want say how long that has been. I remember when you and Fred and my parents use to go out to eat on the weekends. All of you would enjoy the time going out. Fred was really a nice, kind and special man and always had that smile for everyone. They don't make many like him anymore. Both of you have always been dear and special long time friends to our family. My dad probably has already greeted Fred in Heaven and they are catching up on all their stories. They have a lot of catching up to do. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to you and your family and again we are so very sorry for your great loss. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead. Please take care of yourself and if I can do anything for you just let me know and I will sure try. We love you.   Hilda and Jim

My thoughts and prayers reach out to you all in the loss of your sweet husband, father and grandfather. He was such a kind, sweet man with a welcoming smile to everyone. What a wonderful Christian example he was to so many people! I remember he was always present for 5th Sunday singspirations, revivals and Sunrise services. Greg and Tammy - I am sorry that I was unable to make it today, but I was thinking of you and your family. I hope you take comfort in the fact that he was a faithful servant and that he was such a blessing to so many people over the years.  He will be missed!
