I done Miss Bettys hair for years. She was always so kind and we loved to laugh and joke around. She always paid me very well for her hair. I use to go and visit her at her home occasionally and she would show me all her pictures and items around her house and let me know where it piece come from. She talked about her twin sister how she loved her. She may not have had children of her own but she loved every child as her own. I always remembered her phone number because it was the same year I was born. Lol She will be missed by many and I'll never ever forget her kindness to me.

I was a student of Miss Baker's in the late 1970s. She taught and expected excellence - and I still think of her with nearly every word I write. She was kind and fair and elegant and warm and had a nice sense of humor. If there was anyone's standard I ever hoped to meet then or now, it is Miss Barker's. I hope you know that she was respected and loved.

I had Miss Barker for English in 1965. She helped me with reading comprehension and writing my own papers, book reports, or stories. Constructive criticism when needed and never demeaning. It has severed me well over the years. Thank you Miss Barker.

She impacted my life by giving me the gift of reading.  It was hard not to feel the joy she took from novels she was reading, as she spoke about them in class.  I'm sure she knew from letters of thanks we wrote years after our encounter.  A life well lived, so lucky to have crossed her path.

Ms Barker was one of my English teachers in school. She was always willing to help her students individually. I had the privilege of seeing her again at Brookdale nursing facility in Reidsville where my Mom is at. I told her she was my English teacher in school and she got so excited and asked if I continued my education. Told her yes and she told me she was working on her thesis and had a lot to do. She was so sweet. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her. May God give her family and friends comfort in this time of sorrow

Ms. Barker was the only teacher I had that fed my love for reading. She always picked extra books for me to read as she knew I would finish the books assigned for us to read in a couple days. She never disappointed with her choice as she encouraged my love for reading.

Miss Barker was my English teacher and mentor at Morehead High School, and her teachings and guidance have helped me all my life.  She loved her students and loved to teach us and show us that with work, we could all learn! Surely, she is teaching English in Heaven right now!
I hope her family feels the love that everyone has for her and in that knowledge, they find comfort.

Karen,
Miss Barker was one of the hardest and best teachers that I ever had. Who knew that in my adult years I would build a house right beside her and Miss Andrews. There my husband and I raised a family for over 20 years, She was a fantastic neighbor and became a wonderful and special friend who I loved dearly. Karen, I could tell you many stories but the two that stick out in my mind are when we first moved in and my 5 year old son was missing and when he did appear I asked him where he had been to which he replied I've been playing basketball with Betty, I said who is Betty and he replied our next door neighbor mom. First of all, I couldn't imagine calling her Betty  because she was Miss Barker to me and second of all I could not imagine my English teacher playing basketball! Then there was exam time and my husband and I knew that we would be going next door to help get the toilet paper out of her trees because her exams were so difficult.Karen the reason I could not come to her funeral was because I was involved in a wreck and my ankle is broken and I'm not supposed to put any weight on it for 4 months. Even now I find myself trying to check my spelling and grammar so I can do justice to one of the best people that I will ever know.
