Gail Ogburn Flynt died peacefully surrounded by her family on September 4, 2023, at Hospice of Rockingham County.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Leaksville United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1pm-2pm, in the church sanctuary.

Gail was born in Smithfield, NC, to the late Bunnah Evelyn Jones and the late Jasper Victor Ogburn. She had many fond memories of her childhood in Smithfield. Gail graduated from Salem College with a degree in music education. After graduation, she remained in Winston-Salem and taught music at Philo Junior High. During the summer months, she directed the choir at Pfafftown Christian Church where she met her future husband, Tommy.

Following the birth of their daughter, the family moved to Leaksville, NC, (now Eden) where she continued her music career as Choir Director for First Christian Church. She taught piano in their home and eventually continued her career as the music teacher at Lakeside and Douglass Elementary Schools.

In her spare time, Gail enjoyed being a member of the Eden Junior Service League and the Town and Country Garden Club. For a short time, she also served as a member of the handbell choir at Leaksville United Methodist Church. She loved spending time with family and friends at the beaches of North and South Carolina and especially enjoyed her time at Litchfield by the Sea.

Gail is survived by her husband, Tommy; her children, Molly Wright, Will Flynt, and Hoke Flynt (Julie); her beloved grandchildren, Margaret and Elizabeth Wright, William and Warren Flynt, Charlie and Ben Flynt; her sister, Lu Long Medlin and brothers-in-law, Hugh Cullman, Guy Flynt (Jane), and Robert Flynt (Sue); and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Preceding her in death were her sister, Nan Ogburn Cullman; her brother, Vic Ogburn, Jr.; sister-in-law, Anne Ogburn; brother-in-law, Tommy Medlin; and her son-in-law, Kenan Casteen Wright.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff in the Neurosciences ICU at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Hospital and especially to the staff at Hospice of Rockingham County for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

Memorials may be sent to the music program at Leaksville United Methodist Church, 603 Henry Street, Eden, NC 27288; or to Hospice of Rockingham County, 2150 NC 65, Reidsville, NC 27320.

I first met Gail when her children were enrolled at Burton Grove School in Eden.  I was secretary to Dr. Norman and Harold Kendrick - both principals.  Always enjoyed visits from Gail from time to time.  I enjoyed watching her precious children grow up ... I am so sad to hear of her Passing.   Prayers for all the family.

Gail was always welcoming around the schools, where I knew the best. However she was also a noted icon in the community. May God be with Tommy and the family during this time of loss, wrapping his loving arms around them with comfort.

I met Gail more then 10 years ago when I first came to work for her, she always had good stories to tell and we talked about cooking. Really I could talk about anything with Ms Gail. She always cared for me and my family. My thoughts and prayers are with her loving family.

Dear Family,

Of Mrs. Gail Ogburn Flynt, I remember Gail from many, many years ago. Gail taught me piano lessons at her home in Eden, NC. I can still remember playing piano, she would pick out the song she wanted us to play and we would play it. May God Give You Comfort, Peace, & Strength In This Difficult Time! Heaven Has Gained, Another Angel.

Tommy and family, my heart is saddened with learning from Thad Woodard and Rick Willetts about your loss of Gail. Such wonderful memories we Savings and Loan(Bank) friends have of our past gatherings. Gail was a gracious Southern lady and be miss by all whose life she touched.

God's blessings and love from,

Caroline Mitchell (Mrs Nick W. Mitchell, jr)

On Monday, the Ogburns lost our center of gravity. We pride ourselves on being a constellation of fiery stars bounding through the universe, but there was always one thing that held us all together. That was Aunt Gail – the biggest heart and kindest spirit of us all. Got a problem? Ask Gail. Want to have fun? Ask Gail. Want to go shopping? Ask Gail.

About 30 years ago, Gail thought it would be fun to go on a European road trip with my husband and me and our three small boys. We rented a big van and took off from Frankfurt, Germany. When we broke down in the Gotthard tunnel (having filled the diesel van with gasoline) got towed out, got the car drained of the wrong stuff and got back on the road, she was pretty cool about it. What she couldn’t understand was why we preferred lounging around a pool at our Tuscan villa all day instead of going shopping. So every day, in the torrid heat of an Italian summer, we drove her to the train station so that she could make the long journey to Florence to go shopping, returning each evening with ceramics and linens and leather goods and God knows what else. She was completely intrepid. In the evening, she would endure the chaos of 3 small children as if it was charming. Well, when she was there, it was.

And that is how she will remain in our hearts and minds forever – an indominable force for good who loved us all as if we were better behaved than we were. So long for now Aunt Gail. See you at that big ol’ Ogburn reunion in the sky.
